Frequent Questions

How does the current system differ from the one being proposed?

Under the current system, the NPDES permittees are required to submit their data through a hard copy and mail it to the authorized NPDES permitting authority.  The permitting authority is then instructed to input the collected data into the electronic system, either Integrated Compliance Information System-NPDES (ICIS-NPDES) or a comparable state database, and in some instances, to share that data with EPA.

Under the proposed rule, the NPDES permittees would be required to enter the data electronically and send it to the permitting authority and/or EPA directly.
