Frequent Questions

Does the number of facilities identified on the Enforcement Annual Results map equal the number of enforcement actions that EPA announced that it concluded in a given fiscal year, or the number of facilities that were subject to those enforcement actions?

No, for several reasons.

  1. Facilities that received more than one enforcement action during the fiscal year are mapped only once.
  2. In its official counts, EPA, for various reasons, counts only one facility for certain types of enforcement cases (bankruptcy, debt collection, and Underground Injection Control cases), whereas, on the map, all facilities identified for these cases are mapped.
  3. Enforcement cases that address violations at multiple facilities are counted only once, but each facility is displayed on the map.
