Frequent Questions

Who are the participants in Superfund enforcement actions?

EPA and the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) are the primary federal response and agencies for Superfund enforcement actions. Other federal participants in Superfund cleanup actions may later seek to recover their costs through an enforcement action and could include the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Energy, Interior, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. These claims are brought by the Department of Justice in federal district court. States, local governments, and tribes, may also seek to recover their costs associated with cleanup activities.
